Hollowcore slabs are pre-stressed concrete units, cast off-site to precise specifications and delivered to site ready to install. This allows for extremely rapid floor construction with minimal labour.
The benefits go beyond speed. Hollowcore units provide high load capacity, long clear spans, and excellent dimensional accuracy. They perform well in terms of acoustic insulation and fire resistance, and their thermal mass properties can help contribute to building energy efficiency.
Standard slab depths range from 150mm to 300mm, with custom depths available for specialised applications. The continuous voids within the slab not only reduce weight, but also offer potential for routing services or improving thermal performance. Units can be cast with, reduced, solid and/or raked ends, open cores, notches, cast-in fixings, and preformed service holes to further speed up installation and reduce follow-on trade conflicts.
Precast flooring also reduces the number of wet trades on site, improving safety and reducing weather-related delays. When combined with steel or masonry frames, hollowcore slabs form part of a hybrid system that delivers both structural efficiency and programme gains.
